Firework Over the Retention Pond #72

by a contributor

Darren C. Demaree

Nothing sealed,
the kelly green
rowboat we built

on the edge
of the non-shore
out of plastic wrap

& milk crates,
was built to lay aside
& plank the losing

of our loves
upon the flat water.
We watched aging

like it was sport
& we did our best
to invent the words

of passing.
We never let the dogs
turn into dust,

we never let the water
swallow anything
we weren’t done with.
