Nothing sealed,
the kelly green
rowboat we built

on the edge
of the non-shore
out of plastic wrap

& milk crates,
was built to lay aside
& plank the losing

of our loves
upon the flat water.
We watched aging

like it was sport
& we did our best
to invent the words

of passing.
We never let the dogs
turn into dust,

we never let the water
swallow anything
we weren’t done with.

Darren C. Demaree is living in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and children. He is the recipient of two Pushcart Prize nominations, and his first collection, “As We Refer To Our Bodies,” is scheduled to be published early in 2013.
