Roxane Gay, essays editor for The Rumpus and author of “Girl/Box,” made a list over on her turf of books and collections, neatly organized into the following categories: Coming of Age, Journeys, Love Stories, and Looking Ahead. The choices were pulled from works published or forthcoming this fall season.

Halloween is only a couple of weeks away, and I know you’re all wondering exactly how you can integrate your love for literature into a holiday filled with slutty costumes and candy corn. I have the answer: All Hallow’s Read. Don’t know what it is? Don’t worry – Neil Gaiman will explain it to you, if you can tear your focus away from the zombies.

National Book Award finalists have been selected. Winners will be announced on November 14. GalleyCat has done us all a favor and provided links to free samples of all the nominated books.

Inconceivable! Wallace Shawn reads from Denis Johnson’s “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” for The Paris Review. The story is one featured in an audiobook available exclusively for The Paris Review’s app. (It’ll also be in their anthology, Object Lessons, but I think hearing it in Vizzini’s voice will be more fun.)
